Challenge
Create AVA, an academic virtual assistant (a chatbot) to help first-time college students better understand course materials and pass their assessments.
Outcomes
• Built and launched a bot in 4 months
• Over 1,000 unique users within the first month of launch
• An average of 68 messages per user for each conversation
Role
As the Lead UX Designer, reviewed research from the UX research team with 154 participants, created both the conversational and interface design for the chatbot, aligning usability with a natural conversational experience.
UX Research
Oversaw the UX research for the chatbot project, surveying 154 students. Two groups were identified to design for within the AVA project, AI Skeptics (rarely use AI) and AI enthusiasts (regularly use AI)
AVA Interface
Designed an easy-to-use interface for both mobile and web to allow for a fast launch. Working with developers to find the quickest path to launch while keeping student needs in mind and meeting accessibility and security requirements.
Future Features
After the launch of AVA, future features were wireframed in low-fidelity, based on student research, analytical data, and where future technologies might lead. These features include course planning, writing support with document upload, renaming chat with file organizations, quiz mode, and whiteboard. These wireframes helped give the product and development team a roadmap for the future of AVA.
